Parafascicular Thalamic and Orbitofrontal Cortical Inputs to Striatum Represent States for Goal-Directed Action Selection

چکیده

Several lines of evidence accrued over the last 5–10 years have converged to suggest that parafascicular nucleus thalamus and lateral orbitofrontal cortex each represent or contribute internal state/context representations guide action selection in partially observable task situations. In rodents, inactivations structure been found selectively impair performance paradigms testing goal-directed selection, but only when relies on state representations. Electrophysiological has suggested achieves this function via inputs onto cholinergic interneurons (CINs) dorsomedial striatum. Here, we briefly review these studies, then point anatomical regarding afferents what they about specific features Finally, speculate as whether role might be achieved interdependently through direct PF→OFC projections, convergence independent (OFC) (PF) striatal targets.

UP States Protect Ongoing Cortical Activity from Thalamic Inputs

Cortical neurons in vitro and in vivo fluctuate spontaneously between two stable membrane potentials: a depolarized UP state and a hyperpolarized DOWN state. UP states temporally correspond with multineuronal firing sequences which may be important for information processing. To examine how thalamic inputs interact with ongoing cortical UP state activity, we used calcium imaging and targeted wh...

Heterogeneous properties of central lateral and parafascicular thalamic synapses in the striatum

To understand the principles of operation of the striatum it is critical to elucidate the properties of the main excitatory inputs from cortex and thalamus, as well as their ability to activate the main neurons of the striatum, the medium spiny neurons (MSNs). As the thalamostriatal projection is heterogeneous, we set out to isolate and study the thalamic afferent inputs to MSNs using small loc...

Convergent inputs from thalamic motor nuclei and frontal cortical areas to the dorsal striatum in the primate.

Current models of basal ganglia circuitry primarily associate the ventral thalamic nuclei with relaying basal ganglia output to the frontal cortex. However, some studies have demonstrated projections from the ventral anterior (VA) and ventral lateral (VL) thalamic nuclei to the striatum, suggesting that these nuclei directly modulate the striatum. VA/VL nuclei have specific connections with pri...

Three-dimensional transformations for goal-directed action.

Much of the central nervous system is involved in visuomotor transformations for goal-directed gaze and reach movements. These transformations are often described in terms of stimulus location, gaze fixation, and reach endpoints, as viewed through the lens of translational geometry. Here, we argue that the intrinsic (primarily rotational) 3-D geometry of the eye-head-reach systems determines th...
